Recognition of Medical Degrees in Malaysia

Australian medical schools seeking recognition by the Malaysian Medical Council for purposes of Public Service Department (JPA) approval, have previously been advised that the Medical Act 1971 would be amended and recognition for individual medical education programs would no longer be needed. Instead foreign medical graduates would be required to sit an examination for recognition. More information

Report of Chinese media coverage June 2011

A total of 127 news articles were collected in June, of which 48 articles were related to Australia education. 
Compared to last month, in June we saw a decrease in the volume of coverage on the negative implications of the UK visa policy changes. There was news about the pre-departure seminars organized by the British Council.
Regarding the recent announcement of New Zealand immigration policy changes, the coverage was found to be mostly positive.

Study tour in India: Opportunity for law students and faculty

Legislative changes following Baird Review

8 April 2011
Greater protection for international students will be available following the enactment of the first tranche of the legislative changes recommended by the Baird Review. The ESOS Amendment Act, which commenced on 8 April 2011, aims to protect international students by further strengthening education providers’ registration requirements and expanding the role of the Commonwealth Ombudsman for external complaints by international students relating to private providers. Earthquake and tsunami in Japan

Australians are advised to monitor the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) travel advice for Japan for further information and updates regarding the situation in Japan.

British Council: Going Global 2011


15 March 2011
Going Global 2011 took place in Hong Kong on 10–12 March 2011. The international education conference was hosted by the British Council.
The conference discussed student mobility as the largest and most visible component of global education.
Mr Colin Walters, CEO, Australian Education International, participated in the panel discussion on International students – returning the investment.  
For the discussion Mr Walters tabled a paper on Australia’s reform program for international education (1 mb; 102 kb).

 

Student visa program review – submissions invited

8 March 2011
The Government has commissioned a strategic review of the student visa program, headed by the Hon Michael Knight AO, which is to report to the Government in mid-2011.
On 7 March 2011 Mr Knight released a discussion paper, which provides a brief overview of some of the key issues that have emerged from his first round of consultations.
Mr Knight encourages all interested parties to consider making a written submission to the review so their views can be taken into account. Submissions close on Friday 15 April 2011.
