EcEAS International Standard Schools in Indonesia annulled by the Constitutional Court

On the 8 January 2013, the Indonesian Constitutional Court announced its decision (Verdict No. 5/ PUU-X/2012) on the status of the law supporting International Standard Schools in Indonesia.

Better consumer protection for international students

08 March 2012
Amendments to the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 were passed by Parliament on 1 March 2012 and will commence from 1 July 2012, following Royal Assent. The amendments are part of the Government’s second phase response to the Baird Review of ESOS which reported in February 2010.

EU Project Funding now open

Guidelines and applications are now open for the 2012 round of EU/Australia joint mobility and joint degree projects. These projects comprise consortiums of Australian and EU universities or vocational education and training institutions offering students the chance to study overseas in either the EU or Australia.

New arrangements for the STPM in Malaysia

The Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) is to undergo a major revamp commencing with the lower sixth cohort in first term 2012 (starting in June 2012).  STPM results will no longer be based 100% on examination results, but instead will include, over the 18 month period of study, a cumulative assessment of assignments, field research, laboratory work and term examinations. Students will be permitted to resit the first and second term examinations.

Time running out to attract HK students from double-cohort year

13 March 2012
2012 is the double-cohort year when the last cohort of roughly 35,000 A-level graduates (other than those who will retake certain subjects as private candidates next year) and the first cohort of at least 71,000 HKDSE graduates are exiting the schooling system.  Parents and students in Hong Kong are eager to know if Australian institutions would accept HKDSE qualification.

Chinese students abroad - 2011 figures released

09 March 2012 
The Chinese Ministry of Education has released the figures for the number of Chinese students studying abroad during 2011.
Of the total 339,700 Chinese students studying abroad (a 19% increase from 2010), 12,800 were government funded students, 12,100 had been funded by other organisations, and 314,800 were self-funded.

Universitas Gadjah Mada will hold an International Students Summer Program in Jogjakarta on 1-14 July 2012 with the theme of “Alternative Education: Because Education Knows No Boundaries”. It is expected that around 100 students from various countries will join this program. Application is opened until 15 April 2012.

Senator Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research led a delegation to visit Beijing from 19-21 February 2012.
