Minister Counsellor (Education and Research) 



Ms Katherine Vickers was appointed to the position of Minister Counsellor (Education and Research) in the Australian Embassy – China in April 2015.

Prior to taking up her posting, Ms Vickers was Director of the Strategic Policy Unit within the Department of Education and Training’s International Group, where she supported the development of the Draft National Strategy for International Education and the establishment of the Council for International Education.

Ms Vickers has led the Department of Education and Training’s government-to-government engagement with China since 2010, during which time she has overseen the implementation of the Australia China Science and Research Fund, as well as the Government’s support for a number of student mobility and institutional partnership initiatives in China. 

Prior to her public service career, Ms Vickers worked as a senior lecturer and course convenor in the field of media and film theory at the Australian National University, the University of Canberra and the Flinders University of South Australia. 


Katherine holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours 1st Class) from the Flinders University of South Australia.

First Secretary (Education & Research)


Christopher Lawson was appointed to the position of First Secretary (Education and Science) at the Australian Embassy in Beijing in December 2013. 

Christopher brings more than 20 years of experience in the Federal education department to this role, including more than a dozen years in different parts of the international education and science arm of the department on and offshore.
He served as the Director (Education, Science and Training) in the Australian Embassy in Chile in 2004, and he has also conducted research for the Australian government on international education in Taiwan and Japan.
Christopher is a leading expert on Australia’s international student data and research, and has published research on international graduate outcomes, perceptions of studying in Australia, improving the experience of international students studying in Australia, and international student satisfaction with accommodation. In 2012-13, he served as the Research Manager for the secretariat providing support and advice to the International Education Advisory Council chaired by Michael Chaney.
Christopher holds bachelors of economics and arts, and a graduate diploma in the economics of development, all from the Australian National University.
