The Canadian International Education Advisory Panel has produced a report for the Canadian government outlining an international education strategy for Canada following six months of consultation.
The first identified benefit for Canada is, “internationalization—the process of bringing an international dimension into the teaching, research and service activities of Canadian institutions.” The report also identifies the benefits of a global perspective for Canadian students, the economic impact of hosting international students, generating an international alumni, building relationships with partner countries and contributing to immigration and workforce development to meet labour market needs.
The report recommends
- doubling Canada’s international student numbers to over 400,000 in ten years
- a mobility program that supports 50,000 Canadians to study overseas
- the creation of a Council on International Education and Research to advise relevant Ministers
- the establishment of a quality assurance framework
- increased marketing of Canada’s brand with a national portal and e-communication strategy.
