An exciting pilot program,
Australian Student Teacher International Practicum Malaysia, took place in Kuala Lumpur in January 2013. The pilot program supported 16 Bachelor of Education students from Deakin University, La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT University and Victoria University who undertook a practicum at nominated secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This program was developed in cooperation between participating universities, AEI Malaysia and the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Selected students spent three weeks in Malaysian schools, teaching classes and participating in cultural activities.
This innovative project allowed Australian student teachers to build a deep intercultural understanding beyond what can be offered in traditional mobility programs and practicum blocks. The program was well received by school communities, who enjoyed the time spent learning with the Australian student teachers.
The benefits realised through international student mobility opportunities such as this program include the forging of links between people, institutions and governments as well as building goodwill and enduring ties within our region and beyond. Mobility also contributes to Australia’s productivity as students graduating with internationally relevant skills and perspectives build increased business links and develop the capacity for Australians to be effective global citizens.
It is intended that the Australian Student Teacher International Practicum Malaysia will send Australian education students to undertake part of their teaching practicum requirements in a Malaysian school each year.
Ms Jane Duke, Deputy Head of Mission, and AEI Malaysia hosted a reception at the Australian High Commission Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the pilot program, attended by the Australian student teachers and university academics as well as principals and staff of participating Malaysian schools.
