Malaysia is fast becoming an attractive destination for Australian students to further their studies as part of their Australian degree program. In June alone, there were more than 160 students from Australian universities undertaking short term programs in a variety of different modes:
- work integrated learning placements with Malaysian companies
- completing simulated public relations brief
- Non-semester based local university courses and
- teaching in Malaysian schools.
Across disciplines as diverse as law, business, engineering, science and education studies, Malaysia offers a multicultural Asian experience, with a level of access to English speakers unrivalled in the region.
Jemma Smalley-Roberts, a pre-service teacher studying a Graduate Diploma (Primary) at RMIT Bundoora in Victoria valued every minute of this Malaysian experience. Placed in a rural primary school in the town of Tanjong Malim, Jemma said “I was treated like a rock star with students requesting autographs and excitedly waiting to see if I would be teaching their class.” Taking the students through human movement and music classes, all new experiences for the Malaysian students, Jemma commented that the experience “has made me a better teacher and learner, and the personal friendships with Malaysians really help us to understand this amazing region.”
