Representatives from seven leading Australian research institutes and the Australian government visited Tokyo for the 14th Australia-Japan Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation meeting on 23 August 2012. Following the Joint Committee meeting, Australia’s science museum, Questacon, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to renew its partnership with Japan’s Miraikan.
The meetings recognised the value of bilateral collaborations in areas, including nuclear and physical sciences, Antarctic research, space science, marine science, ocean observation and biodiversity, and science communication. Ms Katharine Campbell, Acting Head of the Science and Infrastructure Division of the Department, led the Australian delegation in strategic dialogue on scientific cooperation with Japanese government and research institutes. Australia and Japan confirmed their interest in further developing joint researcher exchange programs between Australian and Japan.
Australia will host the next Joint Committee meeting.
