Celebrating 50 years EU - Australia relations

14 March 2012

This year marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Australia and the European Union (EU).

In March 1962, Sir Edwin McCarthy became the first Australian Ambassador to the European Economic Community. The Delegation of the Commission of the European Communities to Australia was opened twenty years later in 1982.

Fifty years after McCarthy took up his position as Ambassador to the European Economic Community, Australia and the EU enjoy a constructive bilateral relationship seeing eye to eye on key international issues.
