The China Australia Executive Leadership Program (CAELP) continues to attract strong bilateral support from both the Australian and Chinese governments as a valuable mechanism to build deeper understanding between universities. Chinese Vice Minister Hao Ping (Vice Minister responsible for international cooperation and recently nominated by UNESCO as the President of its 37th General Conference) is an alumnus of the program and considers it to be a flagship cooperation initiative between Australia and China.
The CAELP is a university leaders’ professional development program jointly managed by the Universities Australian (UA) and its Chinese counterpart organisation, the Chinese Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE). Since it was established in 1999, CAELP has seen more than 100 university leaders from Australia and China travel to each other's country. The Australian Government has been pleased to support CAELP for many years both through funding the program and by participating in briefing sessions for CAELP participants.
In 2013, 13 universities in China and 10 in Australia participated in the program. In addition, the University of Canberra designed and facilitated a two-day leadership training program for Chinese participants. Feedback on this formal leadership training component was overwhelmingly positive.
In Australia, CAELP has led to a deep understanding of China in our universities, and an increase in the number of university-level agreements between Australian and Chinese Universities. The relationships developed through CAELP provide Australia with a firm base on which to deepen our engagement with China and its universities, providing more opportunities for Australian students, academics, researchers and professionals to take advantage of all that China has to offer.
