The Australian recipients of a 2013 Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award were announced at the Prime Minister’s Awards Presentation Dinner at the National Gallery of Australia on Thursday 6 December 2012.

 

The 20 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate Australian recipients of the award are from 16 Australian universities in six states and territories.

The awards are open to applicants from all fields of study. The 2013 award holders are from a diverse range of disciplines, including the visual arts, mental health, environmental science, law and anthropology.

 

As Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award Holders, they will experience international study and work experience in countries across the region including India, Indonesia, The People’s Republic of China, Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam.

 
University of New South Wales geochemistry student, Mukhlis Mah, is a recipient of a 2013 Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Outgoing Undergraduate Award. Mr Mah will use his Award to undertake groundwater research in the People’s Republic of China.

 

“By making suitable international relationships and gaining new skills, particularly language skills, I hope to facilitate future collaborative ventures in groundwater research,” said Mr Mah.

 

Monash University’s Sarah Henderson will undertake her Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Outgoing Postgraduate Award in Indonesia. During the study component of her award, Ms Henderson will be hosted by the University of Indonesia, where she will enrol in the law faculty’s international program. Following the completion of her studies at the University of Indonesia, Ms Henderson plans to undertake an internship with a local law firm in the area of international arbitration law.

 

“The first component of my program, at the University of Indonesia, will develop my foundational understanding of the Indonesian legal system and place me in good stead to hone my practical Australian legal knowledge with specialised knowledge of Indonesian law,” said Ms Henderson.

 

The Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Awards aim to develop internationally-aware, skilled future leaders and to establish enduring education and professional linkages between Australia and Asia.

 

Along with the forty Australian recipients of the award, the top twenty overseas applicants for the Endeavour Postgraduate Award from eligible countries are also offered a Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award. The international recipients of a 2013 Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award will commence a PhD at an Australian university during this year. Australian applicants must be nominated by their home university and apply online through the Endeavour Awards website, where a full listing of the 2013 Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Outgoing Award Holders is also available.
