On 4 March 2014, Ms Lisa Paul AO PSM, Secretary for Education, welcomed a senior delegation from the Ministry of Education, led by Secretary General Ybhg Datuk Dr Madinah binti Mohamad, for the 2014 Joint Working Group in Canberra. The meeting brought together participants from the Australian Research Council, the Department of Industry VET Group as well as Schools, Higher Education and International groups from the Department of Education.
Australia and Malaysia shared education policy updates. Research strengths of Australia’s universities were also highlighted. The Malaysian Government discussed the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025, including Malaysia’s aspiration to become a higher education hub in the region.
The JWG reached agreement to future cooperation, particularly:
- school education, in relation to teacher quality, school leadership and learning outcomes
- higher education, especially education quality, student employability and graduate outcomes
- increased facilitation of student mobility between the two countries
- elevating the status of vocational education and training and strengthening vocational pathways and
- research collaboration.
The Malaysian delegation also visited the UC Senior Secondary College and the ANU.
