14 October 2011
On Friday 14 October 2011, the Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans announced a new International Education Advisory Council to advise the Australian Government in developing a new long-term strategy for the international education sector in Australia.

The announcement complements Australian Government measures to strengthen the international education sector, including:

  • reforms to the student visa program recommended by the Knight Review
  • strengthening the registration criteria for providers of education services to overseas students
  • extending the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth Ombudsman to include students of private registered providers
  • moving to establish a single agency to safeguard the interests of students if a provider closes.
  • Australian Education International, within DEEWR will provide the secretariat to the Advisory Council.
