Update for Libyan Nationals studying in Australia

5 September 2011
On 1 September the Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, Craig Emerson, and the Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, announced a $1.5m loan to the Libyan Embassy to support Libyan Government scholarship holders and their families. Further information is available on the
Education Minister’s Website.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) will continue to seek up-to-date advice from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and the Libyan Embassy concerning the situation in Libya and the potential impact on Libyan students studying in Australia. Any related enquiries including those from education providers may be directed to the Department’s Middle East inbox: MiddleEast@deewr.gov.au

For student visa related issues please contact DIAC on 131 881. Be advised that this is for onshore international students only, offshore students will need to contact the relevant local DIAC posts.

DIAC have released an information sheet for Libyan nationals currently studying in Australia. This fact sheet can be found on the What’s New for Students page on their website.

Students seeking general information regarding developments in Libya or
travel advice regarding Libya may wish to refer to the DFAT travel advice on specific Middle East countries including Libya. The advice is updated regularly.
