Since 2009, the Australian Universities International Directors’ Forum (AUIDF) has undertaken annual surveys of Australian universities to gather data on their students who study overseas. In 2019, 34 universities responded to the study.​

The GOS is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and was administered by the Social Research Centre.
