Students in Australia should be aware that flexible enrolment and tuition collection arrangements are in place at many Japanese institutions. New enrolments are being accepted, however classes scheduled to commence in April have in many cases been deferred until May. 

The Japanese Government has advised that 130 universities in affected areas including Tokyo and surrounds have postponed or cancelled enrolment ceremonies. Prospective students should confirm the commencement of their classes with their university.  As a result of the planned blackouts and disruptions to public transport, students should be aware that other major universities in Tokyo have also postponed the commencement of classes until May.

Australians are advised to monitor the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) travel advice for Japan for further information and updates regarding the situation in Japan.

Australians in affected areas should follow the instructions of local authorities and check the media for safety information. If further assistance is required, Australians should contact the DFAT directly on +61 2 6261 3305.

All Australian students currently studying in Japan are encouraged to register their details on the DFAT website so that the department can contact you in the case of an emergency.
