APEC Education Mobility workshop in Kuala Lumpur sets direction for future cross-border education cooperation engagement in the Asia-Pacific

The Department of Education hosted the the APEC Cross-Border Education Cooperation Workshop in Kuala Lumpur on 20–22 May 2014, which brought together academics, experts, university and government representatives from 13 APEC economies. Delegates discussed and advised on how to implement the APEC Economic Leaders’ direction (2012) on enhancing student, researcher and education provider mobility in the region, while taking into consideration the circumstances of individual economies.

The APEC Economic Leaders’ direction aims to strengthen regional ties, build people-to-people exchanges, and promote economic development through knowledge and skills transfer. Facilitating the flow of students, researcher and education providers, and reducing the transaction costs involved provides opportunities for a significant expansion of cross-border education services to the benefit of all economies.

The workshop considered education mobility from three perspectives: best practices in cross-border education; challenges faced by students, researchers and education providers; and innovative ideas to enhance cross-border education.

The outcomes of the workshop will be used to inform future activities and priorities in cross-border education in the APEC region. A summary of discussions and presentations are available on the International Education website.
